Maintaining the appearance of the landscape is very important. If the waterproofing has failed, water damage will effect the other structures and leave un-sightly conditions. The minor investment to waterproof is vastly more economical than re-working. The following information is designed for practical advice in four situations:

With new construction it provides the ideal opportunity to waterproof properly. Tank the wall with a liquid applied membrane (at least two coats), prevent damage by installing protection board, and if necessary install drainage cell systems to compliment agricultural drainage.

Repair is often more difficult as the only practical option is to treat the problem from the ‘negative’ side. Typically water will be coming through mortar joints or ‘bubbling’ paint off the wall. The basic approach is to remove any surface coating, getting back to a clean surface via scraping, wire brush or mechanical means. Then add a vapour barrier using epoxy based products.

Decorative options include painting over wall areas with Classique Low Sheen to a colour of choice.

PAVER PROTECTION

Pavers of all styles are porous until treated, if the paver is not produced with a protective coating, it is advisable to apply a suitable product soon after laying. To treat existing pavers may require extensive cleaning prior to application. In most applications a solvent based sealer will be applicable. These products flow on easily but require attention to health and safety preparation.

External concrete with faded colour can be rejuvenated by applying a coloured Sealer product or painting with a hard wearing coating. Before starting the job ensure the area is suitably cleaned removing any grease or substances.

PLANTER BOXES

Start with a clean surface, secure any penetrations, pipes and exit points with polyurethane. Then secure all wall / floor joints by applying polyurethane to the corners (bond breaker), painting the membrane over the area, while wet, install polycloth over joint, coating again with membrane. Once dry apply two coats of membrane over the entire surface. Install protection board to walls. Fill drainage screenings, place geofabric over, then fill with soil.
